Top tips for managing your period on holiday
The long awaited summer holiday is due….but so is your bloody period. They can be bad enough, without the added obstacles that are sun, sea and sand. We can plan all we like, but sometimes our ovaries have different ideas.
We’ve all been there. Collective groans and commiserations ripple through your friends and colleagues. Daydreams of beach pics and cocktails on the beach did not feature menstrual cramps and constant trips to the loo. We aren’t promising a miracle, but with these tips Aunt Flo doesn’t need to get in the way this summer.
- Let’s start with the basics – packing. Think about what will make you feel comfortable and confident on holiday. And yes this may mean leaving those white jeans or light wash denim shorts out of your suitcase. There is nothing worse than constantly worrying about leaking, especially if you are wearing a pale colour. Remove this stress and wear dark colours or patterns just in case. There is a lot to be said for peace of mind – you are on a holiday after all!
- It may seem obvious, but try to pack enough period care for your trip (even if you aren’t expecting your period). That long walk to find a secluded cove seemed like a great idea until you realise you need to change your tampon. Arm yourself with a ‘period pouch’ and more than enough tampons and pads. It’s better to be safe than sorry!
- Get active – Exercise is always important, but even more so if you find yourself riding the crimson wave on holiday. Experts agree that exercise reduces bloating and improves self-image. And whilst you may want to curl up in a ball, getting active on your period can actually reduce menstrual cramps and bloating by improving blood circulation around the body. Even a brisk walk in the sun is sure to raise your mood.
- Make sure you get yourself some hand sanitizer. Given that your vagina is the most absorbent part of your body, clean hands is a must when changing a tampon, pad or period cup. Heat plus germs is a recipe for disaster down there.
- Treat yourself to a new beach cover-up – the last thing you want is to feel self-conscious when lounging by the pool. A fun floaty number will ease your anxieties about leaking and hide that period bloat.
- Stay hydrated – your body will thank you for it. Especially when you are somewhere hot and out in the sun. Lost iron from menstrual bleeding depletes the body of energy and fluid – be mindful of this.
- Practice self-compassion. Give yourself permission to spend the day curled up on a sun lounger with your book whilst your friends go exploring, or wear your loose harem trousers rather than that skimpy skirt you bought especially. It is called the Time of The Month for a reason – because lets be honest, it isn’t a barrel of laughs. Be honest with your partner, family or friends and listen to your body.
- Finally, relax. That is what you have taken time out for after all!
Your period doesn’t have to ruin a holiday. In reality, it can be little more than a minor annoyance if you follow our guide. A few simple changes to your packing list or itinerary is all you need.
