Your questions answered

A period cup (or menstrual cup) is a small & flexible cup that sits inside the vagina and collects fluid, unlike traditional pads, tampons and even reusable period pants which all absorb blood.

It’s designed specially to be inserted into your vagina and be worn for up to 8 hours.

The Mooncup® Beginner is silky-smooth, super soft & creates zero waste. Made from medical grade silicone, it’s easy to insert and remove and can be worn for up to 8 hours - so it’s perfect for those heavy days and allowing you to get on with your day without frequent period care changes. Available in three different sizes,  there’s a Mooncup® Beginner to suit all ages & cervixes.

There’s lots of period cups on the market, but most of them out there follow a similar “off the shelf” design and are often hard, uncomfortable and difficult to use. But not the Mooncup® Beginner. Our co-founder Claire worked with a leading female architect to design, perfect & produce the Mooncup® Beginner  using custom-designed 3D printing technology.

Crafted from medical-grade silicone with a silky smooth finish for extra comfort, the Mooncup® Beginner features a some unique design features:

  • Easy-to-hold Pebble™ pull for hassle-free removal.
  • Tri-Flow™ air release holes to help with suction & keep the cup securely in place.
  • Volume markers so you can keep an eye on your flow.
  • Rounded rim for easy insertion & a secure hold.

The Mooncup® Beginner is made from super soft medical-grade silicone, so it’s easy to fold & insert to sit just below the cervix. Once inside, a period cup forms a leak-proof seal to collect menstrual fluid (this sounds scary, but we promise it’s not!)

Using a period cup is easy once you’ve got the hang of it. Here’s a quick guide to using a period cup:

  1. Wash your hands and get into a comfortable position.
  2. Fold the cup, our favourite is the Punchdown or the C/U fold.
  3. Insert the cup into your vagina by gently separating your labia with one hand and using the other to slowly insert the cup rim-first into the vaginal canal.
  4. Slide the cup up and back aiming towards your tailbone and not directly up until the body of the cup is inside; the stem should be completely inside your vagina.
  5. Check the cup is in place by running a finger along the inside of your vagina up to where the rim of the menstrual cup meets your vagina. Follow the rim and ensure the whole rim is open.
  6. When it's time to empty your cup, you simply break the seal and remove it!

Remember, swapping to a menstrual cup can take a while to get used to (usually around 3 cycles) but we recommend practising when you’re not on your period so you can get used to the process and practise with no mess!

The Mooncup® Beginner is made from hypoallergenic medical-grade silicone for ultimate flexibility, making it the world’s softest menstrual cup.

We manufacture the nüdie cup in completely sterile conditions using clean-room technology and it arrives in a protective bio-wrap bag to protect it even further before you first use it.

When our co-founder Claire first began looking into period cups, she discovered just how hard, rigid & uncomfortable other designs on the market were and set out on a mission to create a cup that was soft & comfortable yet robust enough to ensure leak-free protection.

Thanks to the silky-smooth & flexible medical-grade silicone and organic shape, the Mooncup® Beginner has been designed to be inserted, worn & removed comfortably & completely pain-free.

Yes, the Mooncup® Beginner is made from medical-grade silicone which is hypoallergenic and gynaecologically approved to be suitable for sensitive skin. This is perfect for anyone who is prone to eczema or similar conditions as the wetness of absorbing blood can cause irritation.

The absorption capacity of a tampon is measured in grams (g), while the capacity of the period cup is measured in millilitres (ml). One g is equal to one ml. Depending upon the size you choose (Teen, Size B or Size A), the Mooncup® Beginner has a capacity of 18–32ml. That’s up to three times more than the tampon, which can absorb 6-18 g of menstrual blood.
