Low maintenance beauty hacks inspired by social distancing

If the past few weeks of social distancing have meant wearing less makeup, cutting your own fringe or spending most of your day in PJs, you’re not alone. COVID-19 has thrown us all for a loop, but that low maintenance beauty routine you’ve recently adopted might actually be better for your skin, hair and body. Plus, you’re likely spending fewer hours in front of the mirror each week – giving you more time to spend on the activities you never quite got around to before.

We’re living in unprecedented times, and it’s ok to let yourself go for now (or anytime, for that matter). To keep you feeling naturally beautiful on those Zoom happy hour calls, we’ve rounded up our five favourite low maintenance, social distancing-inspired beauty hacks below.

Go makeup free

When you’re spending 23 of every 24 hours in your house, why waste time painting your face each morning (unless that’s what feeds your soul – in which case, go for it). While most makeup is formulated alongside dermatologists, concealers, powders and dirty brushes can all contribute to acne spots. Try going makeup free for a week and you just might notice a reduction in the number of blemishes on your face.

Grow out your brows

We’ve all over-plucked our brows at one stage (just think back to your 13-year-old self), which can damage hair follicles and give your face a more aged appearance. Now that you won’t be visiting your brow lady for the next few weeks or months, take a waxing/plucking hiatus and let your brows grow back to their original shape. Your brow lady will thank you.

Skip the straightener

If you’re emotionally attached to your GHD’s, now is the perfect time to take a break. We’ve all been told that heat treatments can damage hair, but this is especially true as going weeks without a haircut will leave us with dry, brittle ends. Instead, try banishing frizz with a weekly coconut oil treatment that’ll leave your hair naturally glossy (and smelling delicious).

Eat your way to glowing skin

Now that most of us are no longer picking up a greasy takeaway on the commute home from work, use mealtime as a way to nourish your body from the inside out. Vitamins from food are more easily absorbed than supplements, so a diet rich in fresh fruits and veggies will keep your skin, hair and nails shining.

Be your own manicurist

Many of us have grown accustomed to gel manicures, but gel can weaken nails over time. Give your nails a break from harsh chemicals and paint your own nails with traditional polish, or go au naturale and leave your nails completely polish free.
