  1. The Guilty Feminist

‘I’m a feminist, but I detagged myself from a picture at a women’s conference where we were all standing in front of a sign which said ‘Empowered Not Coward’, because my ankles looked fat.’

Comedian Deborah Frances-White will have you laughing out loud on your commute, much to the annoyance of your fellow passengers. Hosted as a recorded live panel show to UK audiences, The Guilty Feminist is perhaps the most accessible podcast in our list. Beginning each episode with the signature ‘I am a feminist but….’ confessions, we can all take a sigh of relief, knowing that we are not alone in waking up 20 minutes early to apply makeup for the attractive man that takes your train every morning. A comedy show at its heart, this podcast manages to get to the central tensions for modern feminists, and assuaging some of our fears about occasionally using our gender to our advantage.

2. Backtalk

Produced by the ironically named Bitch Media, this weekly pop culture podcast is hosted by Amy and Dahlia, self proclaimed ‘Bitch Editors’. Each episode is a fast paced conversation covering current affairs, the media, film and TV, politics, music, celebrities and more. Recent topics include the confirmation of Brett Kavanagh as Supreme Court Justice in the wake of sexual assault claims, the history of racism and sexism in tennis and the issue of pay inequality in Hollywood.

3. Women’s Hour

The matriarch of the feminist podcast genre, Women’s Hour has been broadcasting daily for over 70 years on BBC Radio 4. Listeners will soon be hooked by the unique mix of current affairs, debate, interview and a wealth of archival material. Presenters Jane Garvey and Jenni Murray are legends of female radio and could not be further from the show’s first male presenter Alan Ivimey in 1946. The show is slightly unusual in that roughly 40% of its regular listeners are male, and is informative, entertaining and educational in equal measure. A reliably safe space for women to discuss real and uncensored female issues.

4. The High-Low

Brought to you by journalists and friends Pandora Sykes and Dolly Alderton, The High-Low is, as the name suggests, a unique hybrid of serious current affairs commentary and pop culture indulgence. The genuine rapport between the hosts is obvious. Listening to an episode is like sitting with your closest girl friends, sharing stories, confessions and outrages over wine.

5. Ladies, We Need To Talk

Hosted by Australian radio and TV personality Yumi Stynes, Ladies, We Need To Talk tackles the ‘taboo’ female topics like menstruation, masturbation and vaginas. In a chatty format, Stynes hosts friends and experts as they debate these topics and discuss the curse of modern womanhood with a refreshing dollop of humour thrown in.
