Notes on the future of femtech

With female voices finally being heard thanks to the #MeToo movement, visionary leaders like Greta Thunberg and everything in between, it’s no surprise that technology has followed suit. Although the first iPhone first hit shelves back in 2007, women’s tech needs are now being met with the arrival of fertility tracking apps like Ava, and pelvic floor trainers like Elvie. As a women’s wellness company, &SISTERS by Mooncup has been on a mission to educate, empower and uplift women through our 100% organic cotton period products and Mooncup  – but this is just beginning. We’re determined to dip our toes in the world of femtech, working with healthcare professionals to develop solutions that make every period a little bit easier.

Our journey so far

Mother-daughter duo Claire and Lucy Lettice were first inspired to create &SISTERS by Mooncup after discovering that many of the girls and women around the world don’t have access to adequate period care. Even in the UK, period poverty continues to hold girls and women back and up to 80% of women believe, incorrectly, that mainstream period products are made from cotton.

&SISTERS by Mooncup organic cotton period products and Mooncups are made using natural and medical-grade ingredients, perfect for eco-conscious people with sensitive skin.

In 2020, not many topics remain taboo, but periods and feminine care are still seen as ‘off limits’ in everyday discussion. We’re on a mission to change that, and we’ve been encouraged to see the recent rise of feminine technology (femtech) – proving that tech entrepreneurs are finally taking women’s concerns seriously and with time, we’ll begin to chip away at the stigma surrounding periods and feminine care.

Our plans for the future

In recent years, femtech has seen enormous growth as women’s voices are finally being heard in the media, in the GP’s office and beyond. Shame, stigma and women “not being believed” have held women back in the past, but with the arrival of femtech, female tech entrepreneurs are finally giving women what they’ve been asking for since the dawn of smart technology. As we and other wellness companies continue to chip away at stigma surrounding women’s issues, we believe that femtech and the femcare industry will continue to flourish.

As a women’s wellness company, we’re already beginning to think about moving into the world of femtech, using smart technology to empower women and provide tools to overcome feminine health problems. When chatting with our customers both in person and online, we’ve heard from women with a range of concerns, but we’ve most commonly noted the need for better period tracking options and period pain relief.
