Empowering books to read this month
Over at &SISTERS by Mooncup we love to read. It nourishes the soul, broadens our horizons and whiles away the hours. We have compiled 10 of our favourite books by inspiring female writers. So whether you prefer a Kindle, audio book or good old-fashioned paperback, dive into one of the below.
Those Who Knew, Idra Novey
The second novel from the award winning author of Ways To Disappear, Those Who Knew really speaks to the #MeToo movement and eerily echoes historic sexual assault allegations which came to light about prominent US politicians before its publication last year. Set on an island (presumed to be Cuba)in the early 2000s, the book explores the themes of silence and power, and how the later can so often secure the former. Following the death of a young female activist and student named Maria, our suspicion is soon cast on Victor, the island's favourite young Senator. Charismatic, popular but violent and very powerful, we see how easily an aggressor in such a position could command his victims' silence for so long.
The Power, Naomi Alderman
This work of science-fiction subverts the societal gender norms so completely that it is almost incomprehensible.
Women and Power, Mary Beard
She Must Be Mad, Charly Cox
We Should All Be Feminists, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
The Little Girl Who Gave Zero Fucks, Amy Kean
The Island of Sea Women, Lisa See
Era of Ignition, Amber Tamblyn
The Moment of Lift, Melinda Gates
