Everything you need to know about protective tampon veils

What is a tampon veil, anyway? We’ve got the answer for you. Tampon veils are the superpower you didn’t even know existed. Not all tampons wear capes, but ours have protective veils.

What is a tampon veil?

Tampon veils are the difference between a good tampon and a bad one. Sure, plenty of mainstream brands have opted to use organic cotton in their tampons, which is great, but they often don’t have protective veils. Ours do.

A tampon veil is a shielding layer of organic cotton, this prevents rogue fibres from staying behind (usually during insertion & removal) and potentially creating a breeding ground for harmful bacteria.

Whilst your vagina is an amazing & self-cleaning organ and should be able to expel most things, however it may be unable to flush out all pieces of tampon fibre left behind. In fact, there’s been cases of nurses having to remove rogue fibres before conducting a smear test and studies about the prevalence of fibre being discovered during cervical exams.

Most mainstream brand tampons have no veil at all, so there’s nothing stopping fibres and even microplastics from staying behind and potentially causing infections.

Why are tampon veils important?

If rogue fibres were to build up and get stuck inside your vagina, you’ll be exposed to nasty infections and in some rare cases toxic shock syndrome. TSS is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition caused by toxins produced by certain types of bacteria, most commonly Staphylococcus aureus (staph) or Streptococcus pyogenes (strep). The toxins enter the bloodstream and can cause a severe immune system reaction, leading to symptoms such as fever, low blood pressure, rash & organ failure.

By swapping to organic cotton tampons (that also have a protective veil) you’ll reduce the risk of experiencing fibre loss and developing TSS. Remember, it’s important to always wear the lowest absorbency required for your flow and never wear a tampon for longer than 8 hours.

Here's an image of a tampon with no veil. As you can see, lots of tampon fibre loss! This puts you at greater risk of infections and TSS.
