BETTER, FROM MOONCUP

We changed period care once already.

We’ve spent over 20 years rethinking period care. We weren’t about to stop at the cup.

So when we made a tampon, we questioned every detail. What goes in it. What stays out. How it feels to insert. How reliably it protects. And what gets left behind when you're done.

The result? A tampon designed with the same body-first thinking we've brought to period care for over two decades.

Frequently asked questions.

Ingredients

What are Mooncup tampons made from?

Our tampons are made from 100% GOTS certified organic cotton. And that's it.

What are Mooncup tampon applicators made from?

Our tampon easy-glide applicators are made from cardboard and contain zero plastic.

Why choose organic cotton tampons?

Organic cotton keeps things simple. It’s naturally soft and breathable, and grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides or fertilisers.

Mooncup tampons go one better: they’re 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton, including the core, string and protective veil. No fragrances, dyes, synthetic fibres or unnecessary extras.

That protective organic cotton veil helps keep fibres together and reduce shedding during insertion and removal. A small detail, but an important one when we’re talking about something that goes inside your vagina.

100% organic cotton. Nothing you don’t need. Period.

Are Mooncup tampons plastic-free?

Yep. Completely. Our tampon, string and protective veil are made from 100% organic cotton, and our easy-glide applicator is made from cardboard.

No petroleum plastic hiding in the tampon. No plastic applicator.

100% plastic-free, from tip to string.

How to use

How do I insert a tampon for the first time?

First time? You’ve got this. Take your time, get comfortable and don’t force anything.

  1. Wash your hands and unwrap your tampon.
  2. Find a comfortable position. Sitting on the toilet, squatting or standing with one leg raised can all work.
  3. Twist the applicator to unlock it.
  4. Hold the applicator at the grip and gently guide the smooth, rounded tip into your vagina, angling it slightly towards your lower back.
  5. Push the applicator until it’s fully inserted, then gently remove. The tampon stays put, with the string hanging outside your body.

You shouldn’t really feel your tampon once it’s in. If it feels uncomfortable, remove it and try again with a fresh one when you’re ready.

Are Mooncup tampon eco applicators easy to use?

Absolutely! Our applicator tampons do require “unlocking” before you can insert but that’s easy too:

  1. Hold the tampon by the grooved rings
  2. Twist the inner tube to “unlock”
  3. Insert into your vagina as normal!

Will inserting a tampon hurt?

It shouldn’t. When a tampon is inserted correctly, you should barely notice it’s there.

If insertion feels uncomfortable, don’t force it. A few things can help:

  • Check your flow: Inserting or removing a tampon can feel less comfortable on lighter days when there’s less menstrual blood.
  • Relax: Tensing your pelvic floor muscles can make insertion trickier. Take your time, breathe and try again when you feel ready.
  • Try a different angle: Every body is different, and tampons generally insert more easily when angled slightly towards your lower back rather than straight up.
  • Use the right absorbency: Choose the lowest absorbency you need for your flow.

Our easy-glide applicator has a smooth, rounded tip to help make insertion comfortable and fuss-free.

If inserting, wearing or removing a tampon is regularly painful, stop using it and speak to a healthcare professional. Pain can have a number of causes and isn’t something you should have to push through.

Which tampon absorbency is best for me?

The golden rule: use the lowest absorbency that works for your flow.

Your flow can change throughout your period, so your tampon might too. Heavier day? Go up. Lighter day? Go down.

Here’s the quick version:

  • Regular: For light to medium flow, or if you usually reach for ‘regular’ or ‘normal’ tampons.
  • Super: For heavier flow days when Regular just isn’t cutting it.

How do I know when it's time to remove a tampon?

Your flow is the best guide. Around the 4-hour mark, gently tug the string. If the tampon starts to slide out easily, it’s probably ready to be changed.

How often you need to change it will depend on your flow, which is why choosing the right absorbency matters too.

The non-negotiable bit: never leave a tampon in for more than 8 hours, even if it isn’t full.

I think my tampon is stuck, what do I do?

First things first: don’t panic. A tampon can’t get lost inside your body, but it can sometimes sit higher in the vagina or the string can tuck itself out of reach.

If you can’t remove it easily:

  1. Wash your hands and get comfortable. Sitting on the toilet or squatting can help.
  2. Relax your pelvic floor and gently bear down, as if you’re having a bowel movement.
  3. If you can reach the tampon or string with clean fingers, gently pull it out.
  4. If you can’t reach it or it won’t come out easily, don’t force it. Contact a healthcare professional for help.

Never use tweezers, tongs or another object to try to remove a tampon.

If you develop symptoms including a high temperature, vomiting or diarrhoea, dizziness or fainting, a rash, confusion or difficulty breathing, remove the tampon if you can and seek urgent medical help. These can be symptoms of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS), which is rare but can be serious.

If you’re worried about a retained tampon, unusual discharge or smell, pain, or think part of a tampon may still be inside your vagina, speak to a healthcare professional.

How often should I change my tampon?

As a rule of thumb, change your tampon every 4–8 hours, depending on your flow.

On heavier days, you might need to change it sooner. If you’re regularly soaking through a tampon in less than 4 hours, it could be worth moving up an absorbency.

And the golden rule: never leave a tampon in for more than 8 hours.

Can I sleep with a tampon in?

Yep, you can sleep with a tampon in. Just keep the 8-hour rule in mind.

  • Pop in a fresh tampon just before bed and remove it when you wake up.
  • Choose the lowest absorbency that works for your flow.
  • Sleeping longer than 8 hours? Choose period pants or a pad instead.
  • Heavy night? Period pants or a pad can also give you a little extra backup.

Sweet dreams. Fresh tampon in the morning.
